Pio Cesare IL Bricco Barbaresco 2019 - 0.75l
Il Bricco comes from the highest, windiest and coolest location in Barbaresco available. This location is in Treiso and not directly in Barbaresco. At Pio Cesare, this wine is mostly matured in large wooden barrels made of French and Slavonian oak. However, ten percent of the wine matures for a year in barriques that have already been used for a second or third time. After this first year, the wine from the barriques also moves into the large wooden barrels, where it is aged for a second year. I tasted a sample from the barrel here, and the wine will be released in May 2023.
In the glass, Il Bricco appears much darker and stronger compared to Pio Cesare's Barbaresco local wine. It is a significant step up the quality ladder. This wine is a concentrated and focused version of Barbaresco, characterized by red fruit aromas and a fragrant character with subtle balsamic and bitter herbs. It also shows impressive concentration and balance on the palate. The numerous tannins are ripe and give the wine a fantastic, fine structure of the highest quality. Il Bricco is once again a masterpiece of elegance this year, but there is only an extremely limited supply of just 7,000 bottles. This wine is one of the best from Barbaresco in an excellent vintage and has the potential to compete with Giacosa's Asili. An outstanding drop! Bravo!
