Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato 2019 - 0.75l
Ornato is a neighboring location to Sperss in southern Serralunga. It extends to an altitude of 380-400 meters and is shaped like an amphitheater. The vines face south, southwest and slightly southeast and enjoy sunshine all day long. This gives the situation warmth and maturity. A hail net also protects the grapes from excessive sunlight. The soil is mainly limestone with hints of chalk and white clay, as well as a small amount of sand - a classic Serralunga terroir.
Most of the winemaking takes place in large wooden barrels made of French and Slavonian oak. However, some of the wine matures for a year in barriques that have previously been used for the second or third time. After this time, the barrique wine is moved to the large wooden barrels, where it matures for another two years.
In the glass, this wine shows a clear, bright ruby red. The nose reveals a dense, dark and spicy aroma with notes of graphite, juicy dark cherry and a hint of smoke. There are also subtle hints of ethereal and slightly bitter herbs. Silky and finely structured, almost chalky tannins develop on the palate. Nuances of bay leaf, the spice of a fragrant autumn forest, yellow flowers, juicy blackberries and black cherries emerge. This wine undoubtedly has the potential to age for a long time, not only due to its tannins but also thanks to the impressive freshness and perfect acid balance. A great Barolo in limited quantities - only 10,000-15,000 bottles are produced depending on the vintage. A fantastic wine that combines hedonism and drama in one glass. Rating: 97/100 points.
